Spike from "The Little Giants"

Spike was this kid in the movie "Little Giants" that was a big deal in town. he was a new kid and had recently moved in town, and the O' Shea brothers are going to go all out to get them on their perspective teams. At first, Danny is able to get Spike onto his team, which is huge since they have no outstanding players. The only reason, however, that Spike went onto Danny's team was because Danny lied and said he was the famous NFL player Kevin O' Shea. Spike's father discovers that Danny is a liar, and puts him onto Kevin's team. In the end, Spike get's dropped on his ass by a girl nicknamed "Ice Box", and the Little Giants win. But look at the picture above. Yeah, it's Spike, a 10 year old boy, picking up a Fridge. I think it is safe to say that Spike's dad was giving Spike some "vitamins" from now and then. None the less, Spike will be remembered for his crazy play, roid rage antics, and getting laid out by a chick.

Why the UCONN Huskies Football Team Could be BETTER than Last Year.

Above: Andre Dixon, UCONN's current Starting Running back

Last year, UConn Football fans came to the Rent to watch the team try and defeat Rhode Island. They wanted to see Andre Dixon, the running back that was explosive and overall a better back than Donald Brown. But as Donald Brown began to have the best season of his career, leading the NCAA in rushing, and making 2nd team All- American, Andre Dixon was injured, or later supsended. The once crazy running back was now taking a knee for the best Running back in UConn history. Now in 2009, it is his time to shine.
The UConn Huskies are projected to come in 6th place in the Big East, only in front of Syracuse and Louisville. However, I think we will do better than that, much better. Here are a few reasons:
1) Last year, UConn running back stole the spotlight from Dixon. He was thought of only as a mediocre running back, but with all the effort put in the gym, Brown became a star. If Dixon has worked hard this summer, then do not be suprised if Andre is able to put up some big numbers.

2) The Huskies now have a decent Quarter Back in Zach Frazier. Frazier will stay in the pocket and pass, unlike the QB's in the past (Lorenzon, Hernandez). He will take a big hit if he is able to get the pass off. Aside his horrific performance in the West Virginia game (4 attempted pass, 3 interceptions), Frazier was able to play well. He may be able to have a good season ahead of him.

3) Most of the Huskies core defensive players return. Scott Lutrus will look to have another crazy season, and prove himself to be a great running back. If the defense performs well again this year, the Huskies will be able to win more games.
If this is able to happen, expect the Huskies to win some of the big games they have against Notre Dame, Baylor, and UNC. I expect them to play better than they did last season.

WWE vs. UFC, Who Makes More Money?

(This was written in a fight with my friend that WWE does make more money than UFC)

With all the recent success of the UFC, many fans will be lead to believe that the WWE does not make nearly as much money as Dana White and the UFC. UFC 100's biggest PPV, UFC 100, grossed a total of 5.1 million dollars, second place to their largest total of 5.4 million dollars (Liddell vs. Ortiz). The WWE pay per view Wrestlemania 25, grossed 6.9 million dollars, their best PPV amount ever. There was approximately 1 million PPV buys for the Wrestlemania 25 event, and over 70,000 people in attendence (70,744). The UFC only had about 900,000 purchases, and had only 10,871 attendees, 9,793 paid. The remaining tickets were given for free for what is to believed to fill up the arena. The WWE's pay per view purchases made them approximately 49,990,000 dollars, where UFC made approximately 40,455,000 dollars, about 9 .5 million dollars less then the WWE. If we assume all tickets are worth 20 dollars, the UFC had have made 195,860 dollars off tickets while the WWE would have made 14,000,000 dollars, about 71 times as much money as UFC. The UFC will continue to increase their profits, but the WWE remains on top.

The Nomar Garciaparra Experience

Ah, Nomar Garciaparra. A star for the Boston Red Sox for 8 years, Nomar was one of the crop players of the 90's and early 2000's. But sadly, Boston struck Nomar too hard and eventually he was sick and fed up of the Boston publicity. He could barely walk in the streets without someone stopping him for an autograph, or to take a picture. He wanted out of Boston, bad. The Red Sox fans however wanted him to stay forever. You see Nomar said once that his dream was to retire in a Red Sox uniform. And when the Red Sox traded him to the Cubs, their souls were crushed. But without him, the Red Sox pulled an unbelievable feat of winning the World Series, ending the 86 year drought and reversing the Curse of the Bambino. For 5 years, the Red Sox Nation had not seen Nomar, as he was in Chicago, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He then signed as a free agent with the Oakland Athletics, coming back to the AL. On July 6th, 2009, Nomar returned to the Fenway Faithful. It was like Nomar had never left, as he was given a standing ovation that lasted almost 70 seconds long. After grounding out, Nomar passed the Red Sox dugout and thanks the team, and also agknowledged the fans, who still gave him a loud ovation. Later, Nomar said that it would still be nice to end his career with the Boston. Most Red Sox fans would not mind having the great short stop return to their team once last time. But honestly, no matter where Nomar goes next in his career, it is no question that the Fenway Faithful will be rooting for him. But don't get me wrong, Nomar back in a Sox uniform would be a wonder.

A Connecticut Huskies Fan's Perspective on the NBA Draft

(Here is another post I had on the Sports Guru page, that I am sending to this site. I will start writing new posts tommorow. Enjoy these classic pieces)
As I said yesterday, UConn football is a snowball that is only getting bigger and gaining attention in the NCAA. However, UConn fans have had a long happiness of their division of basketball. The players produced are phenomenal, the coach (Jim Calhoun) is highley regarded as the best coach in the game today. The UConn Men's and even Women's Basketball Programs have been greatly successful.

Look at the players draft out of UConn since 1990:
-1996: Ray Allen, 5th Pick Overall to the Minnesota T-Wolves
-1999: Richard "Rip" Hamilton, 7th Pick Overall to the Washington Wizards
- 1994: Donyell Marshall, 4th Pick Overall to the Minnesota T-Wolves
- 2004: Emeka Okefor, 2nd Overall to the Charolette Bobcats
- 2004: Ben Gordon, 3rd Overall to the Chicago Bulls
-1996: Travis Knight, 29th Overall to the Chicago Bulls
-2006: Hilton Armstrong, 12th Overall to the New Orleans Hornets
-2006: Josh Boone, 23rd Overall to the New Jersey Nets
-1993: Scott Burrell, 20th Overall to the New Orleans (Then Charolatte) Hornets
-2002: Caron Butler, 10th Overall to the Miami Heat
-2000: Khalid El- Amin, 34th Overall to the Chicago Bulls
-2006: Rudy Gay, 8th Overall to the Memphis Grizzlies
-1990: Tate George, 22nd Overall by the New Jersey Nets
- 1995: Donny Marshall, 39th Overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers
-1992: Chris Smith, 34th Overall to the Minnesota T-Wolves
-2005: Charlie Villanueva, 7th Pick to the Toronto Raptors
-2000: Jake Voskuhl, 33rd Overall to the Chicago Bulls
-2006: Marcus Williams, 22nd Overall to the New Jersey Nets

With this type of resume you can assure that NBA Bound Stars Hasheem Thabeet, Jeff Adrien, and AJ Price will make an impact in the league, like many of the stars above have. UConn fans are not happy however when players are drafted. 'Why?' you must ask. This is because these players are so good that every fan thinks that if they stay 1 More Year, they can win the National Title. Little do they know that a whole group of High Schoolers are getting ready for their chance at spotlight, such as Ater Majok, and many others that will become the new face of the UConn franchise.

A Connecticut Huskies Fan's Perspective on the NFL Draft

(This was made April 21st, 2009. I have published it on this blog since I no longer am going to do the "Sports Guru" blog. Enjoy this peice, and tommorow's piece about UCONN basketball. Afterwards, new posts wiull eb published. Thanks.)

Come April 25th, 2009, the NFL will hold the NFL Draft, where teams choose players coming out of college and lasts two days. There are 256 picks, the last, Mr. Irrelevant. But when you are a Connecticut Huskies Football fan, the draft is something tottally more important. This year, 4 players from UConn, are projected to be drafted: (From left to right: Donald Brown, Darius Butler, William Beatty, and Cody Brown):

These men played for UCONN for 4, (3 for Donald Brown), years and led them to a International and Meineke Car Care Bowl. They won the International Bowl. With these guys leaving, the UConn fans grasp to a hope that because of the talent these players possess, the UConn Football program will be giving a much needed dose of respect, and honor.

Let's look at the previous draft picks from the UConn Program Since 1990:
-1992:Brian Kozlowski: Undrafted Free Agent, Signed by Giants.
- 2005: Dan Orlovsky: Round 5, Pick 145, Detroit Lions
-2005: Alfred Fincher: Round 3, Pick 82, New Orleans Saints
- 2006: Deon Anderson: Round 6, Pick 195, Dallas Cowboys
-2008: Tyvon Branch: Round 4, Pick 100, Oakland Raiders
-2008: Donald Thomas: Round 6, Pick 195, Miami Dolphins
-2008: Danny Lansanah: Undrafted Free Agent, Signed by Packers.

As you can see, no players from Connecticut have gone in the first 2 1/2 rounds, but taking that the UConn program have been in the Big East only 6 years, it is hard to believe that some talented athletes can come from a team like that. (And for the record, of the 6 seasons, UConn has made a bowl game 50% of the time (3 games). So to UConn fans, this is a year to show that UConn can produce as well, and not to mention that Dhana Deleston and Julius Williams (Left to Right) may be late round or free agent picks.

So come draft day be assured that me and all the other UConn fans will be huddling around the TV, just waiting for the much deserved fame for the hardest workers UConn has ever had...
